More Than a Phone is a program that donates smartphones and data services to survivors of Domestic Violence. Our goal is to help those in need stay connected; as most of us know, our wireless devices are nearly a necessity. When faced with a traumatic life event, the reassurance of being connected can help reduce some stress. Our program was started in Central Indiana in mid-2017 with the help of our local agencies. Their feedback helped us to create a program we launched nationally in October 2018.
We believe all survivors can embrace who they are,
define their future, and change the world.
Meet The Team
Julie serves as the Executive Director of More Than a Phone and Round Room Gives. She has her master’s degree from the IU Lilly School of Philanthropy as well as a graduate certificate in non-profit management from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. As owner with husband and CEO, Scott, they both value their communities and giving back as a big part of the way they do business.
Julie graduated with a degree in both microbiology and genetic biology from Purdue University. She found herself naturally more attracted to the nonprofit sector and volunteered and served on the board of the Marion-Grant County Humane Society for five years before moving with her family to Carmel, IN. This transition brought about the desire to more formally engage in the sector by pursuing her master’s degree.
Julie and Scott met in high school and have been married for 17 years. Julie is actively involved in the family business supporting the corporate good initiatives and design for their businesses. She is a mother to Mason (14) and Marlee (12) and her four-legged friends Jax, Ralphie, Hazel, and Luna. Julie sits on the Learning to Give Board, Christel House Academy board, and the IU Health Medical Center Philanthropy Council.
Courtney serves as the Program Director for More Than a Phone and Round Room Gives. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, Courtney returned to her roots in Indianapolis and for much of her life has been a “professional volunteer.” She spent many years volunteering in many capacities with Kappa Kappa Gamma, The Children’s Museum Guild of Indianapolis, Brooke’s Place for Grieving Young Children, Jameson, Inc., The Hero Project for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent, SPORTS Youth Baseball league, Hamilton Southeastern Touchdown Club and most recently has been working on the board of Hamilton Southeastern Young Life.
Courtney met her husband Derek at Indiana University and they have been married for 22 years. They have three sons: Max (20); Sam (18) and Eli (16). After being a stay at home mom/professional volunteer, she decided to seek employment where she could put her many skills to work giving money, instead of time to the community. More Than a Phone and Round Room Gives were the perfect match and she has been working with Julie for 2.5 years growing the resources to expand the reach of both nonprofits. Most recently, she was elected to the Board of Directors for The Coburn Place.
